Another Saturday very well spent with Tina.
Because I am also tight with my tuition schedule, Tina always tells me to leave the concept of my Excluzif apparels' photoshoot to her.
So, the past photoshoots were all planned by Tina whom you know by now is not only a make up artiste but a choreographer...stylist...etc.

Tina, I am very blessed to have crossed paths with you sister.
Thank you to Jali for this. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have met Tina.

Yesterday, Tina was like a headless chicken running around. So busy.

I am very happy to have met with an inspiring young lady by the name of Farah.
She is the Founder of Saffanah (Hijabis.sg) over at Facebook and she just launched a blog meant to inspire ladies out there to make the 'hijrah'. May Allah bless niatnya yang baik. :)

Last Saturday, we had a bukan calang calang orang punya model to join us in our shootout.
Her name is Leah Johnson.

Very lame my brudders, I know but love them anyway.

The moment Leah stepped in, all of us just stared and stared and stared at her.

And then we found out that she used to be in Australia's Next Top Model!

There are some people who are born beautiful with a slim face, big eyes with long dark lashes, small sharp nose, flawless skin - the works. The rest of us, however, aren't so lucky. So some of us wallow in self-pity everyday and wonder why life is so unfair. Some resort to paying tons of money for plastic surgery.

Some of us ARE MUCH SMARTER and learn to PUT ON MAKEUP :)

Also Tina's close friend and a former cheecher like me, this woman is so bubbly she lights up the whole room. Great sense of humour aside, when it comes to work, man, she is serious. Okay, still at the topic of hijabs.
It has only been more than a month and already, my wardrobe is bursting with so many scarves.

Even though I have aplenty, I find it difficult to find scarves that are age appropriately glamorous. You know what I mean?

Girl Power!

Good Monday morning all.
Typing as fast as I can so that I won't be late for my class later.

As the school term has started, my tuition sessions pon sudah start engine already. Another busy year ahead but Alhamdullilah, busy is good!

My Primary 5 and Primary 6 classes are full and I intend to keep this group small because I really want to focus on each and everyone of my graduating tutees.
Hence if you have emailed me and I didn't reply, my sincerest apologies.

I also have another group of Sec Ones. (Yes, all Bottoms Uppers since last year.) Very nice to have them back with me as I hope to see 5 of them make that switch from Normal Technical Stream to Normal Academic stream and 1 from Normal Academic stream to Express Stream. ALL of them in fact look very hungry to make that switch, I'm real proud.

And then my Primary 1 babies. They are so cute caaaaaannnnnnnnn?! And such a noisy bunch! They really have loads to share.
The reason I open up a Primary 1 class is because I have always enjoyed teaching Nyla at home and why not I extend these lessons to other children who'd love to learn and play at the same time. Nyla too is having a blast because she has new friends.

Still at the topic of education, I'd like to congratulate my dear Jenn for securing a writing workshop programme in a primary school. Yahoo!!!!! This time round, my turn to assist her and be one of the workshop trainers. Anything for you Jenn!

Last Saturday morning, I had a photoshoot for an online shop which was first based in Washington and now spreading its wings to sunny Singapore. How cool is that?! I'll blog about this soon enough. And of course, I tarik Tina along and included her in this assignment. So we both started work real early. She fetched me at 6.50 a.m. By 10.15 a.m we were done and while I rushed home for tuition, Tina rushed for her other make up assignments.

It has been such a great start to such a marvellous Monday. Ok got to go for my lesson already. Lunching at Geylang later with Shikin who will be fetching me later (WOOOHOOO!) as well as Diana who will be joining us after she has settled her kids in school.

Really, I feel very blessed to be surrounded by such positive forces such as all these wonderwomen I have mentioned in this entry. Girl Power la! Hehehhe!

Ok back to getaway!

Just you and your spouse....Both of you holding hands...Putting arms around each other...Smiling at each other...Sharing conversations...Intimacy.

SO FUN TO FANTASIZE hor?

Ok sorry to burst the bubble but....
In reality, one of you (as in either the wife or the husband) will surely say this one when you ask your partner this question.

"Honey, wanna go for getaway?'

"Aiya, if go, then who to look after the kids? Don't wanna burden Mom and Dad la. Poor thing also la the kids. I'll miss them!" (This one usually I say.)

"How to finish work man if go for getaway?! Time is precious you know oi! No time la!" (Mr E will be guilty of this.)

"Sayang seh. The money we can save leh." (Both of us. But usually Mr E la. lol! :p)

And then it gets hard to do and placed low on our priority list. :(

E and I are entering our 8th year of marriage this year.
We have been on numerous family vacations but the last time we enjoyed a just- the- two- of us vacation was in July 2008. I can't remember the exact date but that Saturday is still very vivid in both our minds.
E's good friend, Zach, invited us to his birthday celebration at Johor Bahru and booked a hotel room for us.
That night was just very amazing.
E and I were so relaxed, our couple-ness renewed by that one night away from the everydayness of 'home' life, that time devoted to total rest and relaxation and focused on just us.

I am going to be very honest here.
The past years, as much as we shared aplenty wonderful moments, menyampah moments pon ada jugak beb.
What to do?
Both of us get burned out on our jobs...parenting duties....get tired...so snapped at each other la.
What?! You all actually think marriage is easy peasy lemon squeazy?!
Marriage is hard work hor.

I am very thankful to be given this opportunity to blog about an upcoming Couples Retreat event organised by PROWISE specially for couples who have been married for 10 years or less. It made both E and I 'wake up' and realise that we have been so immersed in our jobs lately. Time to take a break but instead of a kit kat, we go for a short getaway. :p

May you and your spouse come back from Pulai Springs all recharged and re-energised and most importantly, your love more intense.

If you think wearing a hijab limits a woman’s options in terms of wardrobe, aisey, you are so wrong man.
Hijab-wear is no longer the boring mak- mak jubah type k.
Funny how wearing the hijab has made me less resistant to trying out different types of clothes.

The fusion of fashion and hijab. Beautiful stuff.
I strongly believe that modest dressing should not necessarily be plain and dull.
Not supposed to make you look sloppy and unstylish.
Besides, we must all dress up to feel more confident and appear presentable.

Really glad it's Friday.

Been such an overwhelming week.
I've started studying again and the topics learnt the past few days are very cheem one.
*PULLS HAIR!*
Once I'm more settled, I'll blog about this.
My family has been urging me to take this course for the longest time.
A case of them always insisting...and me resisting.
So imagine their joy when I finally said,"Ok Ok la. I'll do it."
Anyway, gaining knowledge is always beneficial so I'm cool. :)

Mr E's school term also has just begun and he is extremely busy with Singapore Poly Open House.
(5-7 January)

I thought I'd drop by his school yesterday but my meeting overshot sikit so today it shall be since I no longer have to be at Nyla's school during recess.

Ah and there's Nyla's school.
Very grateful to my brothers and parents for taking over the sending of Nyla to school.
First day was a disaster by the way.
She cried and was so clingy to my mom.
And my mom being the protective grandmother also refused to let go of Nyla. WALANDE!
When I called Mom to check on Nyla, she was crying too la.
"Kesian Kin, Nyla nangis... Jangan suruh Mak hantar la. Sedih la."

Aisey, Mother ahhhhhh, how come when I was in Primary 1, you didn't cry along with meeee?

Nyla wasn't her chirpy self when I fetched her on the first day.

At home:
Nyla: Mommy, just sell my bag and uniform la. I'll stay home.
Me: ???????!!!!!!!

So I activated Nyla's uncles to take over this duty since with my mom, Nyla's all emo. (vice versa)
Jambi and Bah took time off to handle their niece and she was okay. No tears whatsover! PHEW!

Nyla: Lucky you never sell my uniform, Mommy! School is fun!

Great stuff Nyla.

Just last Monday, I had a hijab photoshoot with the RebelPixel Photography team featuring an amazing make up artiste who happens to be Tina's close friend.
A hijaber herself, she is fantastic with hijab styling! So those of you getting engaged or married this year, you so gonna love this hijab fairy godmother who can turn you into a hijabella!

And I will also be featuring a hijab online boutique run by four amazing ladies next week.

Tomorrow my Primary 1 tuition class will commence!

I must thank Sister Raudhah for always notifying me about interesting activities that are happening.
If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have attended Ustaz Kazim Elias' talk at Yio Chu Kang Stadium last night.
I don't even know of this wise man's existence la.
Now I do! And when I do, must loudhail and share with you people.

My motto is 'Sharing is caring.'
What more good things that can benefit us in our afterlives.

Ustaz Kazim is such an entertaining speaker.
That ability to make you ponder about your weaknesses, (how small we really are) and at the same time he can make you laugh your intestines out.

Tomorrow, the topic will be 'Rumahku Syurgaku' (Thanks Rafidah for sharing this!)
Mr E and I will be going to Al-Mawaddah mosque (At Sengkang) at 9 a.m to listen to him.

2011 and the previous years have been wonderful.
As well as not so wonderful. There were moments I regretted, never wished I'd done but there is really no point in regretting because there is nothing you can do about them except to move on and strive to improve.
I have felt an immense state of sadness too the past years but in those moments I have also found intense happiness.
And for this, I thank only the One Above, my Creator, Allah.

DUAL-TONE Excluzif Ponchos

Just to satisfy someone's craving to stay in a hotel.
Nyla is clueless. She thinks we are going there for shopping so she's in for a surprise!

I also cannot bear to let you ladies wait so here I am working overtime.

I must thank my woman, Tina, for conceptualising this photoshoot.
I just had to turn up at the studio with the new ponchos.
Tina can do so many things: choreograph...do make-up....style...
In short, she's just multi-talented.
Just a week ago, she came to my place to conduct make-up lessons for my mommy friends.

One who is not icky about time, what was supposed to be a 2 hour lesson dragged to 3 and half hours! No extra charge. Extra fun time.
God bless you Tina, the travelling make up tutor! If you and your friends wanna look pretty or learn how to apply make up, just PM her over at Facebook.

Then for today's shoot, she brought along 2 beauties who won awards in their respective pageants that Tina choreographed. Sidetrack abit. This one got to thank my bro, Jambi. At that time he was studying at SIM and needed someone to choreograph a pageant. Tina did such a fantastic job with the first one that for subsequent pageants, she was called back.
WOOHOO stuff. Extremely proud of her.

Ok back to the beauties. They are Michelle who won Body Beautiful at the recent RMIT Pageant. (Still got the cheek to say that she has put on weight. YAK DUSH DUSH! :p) and Espall Sandhu who is this year's SIM-UB winner. Our Bollywood beauty :)

Have you watched?
I enjoyed this very much I watched twice la.

The first time, I watched with E's cousin, Kak Ana and her children.

Second time, with my mom, Wak Gayah and Bibik Juma.
E was on leave and Nyla pleaded with me not to bring her along so I left Nyla with him.

Wak Gayah and my mom actually bought the novel...made sure they read it before watching.
It was a nice outing. Funny also.

Sidetrack abit.
I remember the last time I watched a movie with Wak Gayah was when I was seven, I think...We watched some cartoon dinosaur movie. "The Land before Time."
Wak Gayah, her son, Udin...My mom, myself and younger bro, Jambi.
At the old Cathay if I am not mistaken.

People, you heard about Makcik Keropok right?
Apparently, there is a new sighting now.
Of this pretty lady in black carrying a big basket...*DO NOT FREAK OUT.*

When I saw this irresistable enchantress at my corridor walking towards my house, I was super excited can?
2 reasons.

Reason Number 1.
She was actually my secondary schoolmate back in Yusof Ishak Secondary School. I knew of her existence because she was kinda cool la. Step Gwen Stefani gituk. But we never spoke to each other. She too cool for me la I guess. :p We met again twice during my workshops too last week and few weeks back! So yesterday maciam excited that we will be chit chatting with each other. Like finally.

Reason Number 2.
A stay at home mother for 8 years, this lady is reviving the past trend of making business.
You know the door-to-door sales? I find this idea extremely fascinating.

By the way, would you like to know what is inside her huge basket?
Beautiful....Absolutely beautiful Abayas.

The moment she stepped into my house, she asked me if I owned a jubah/abaya?
I told her I have one and showed her mine.
The moment she saw my abaya, she asked,"You bought this in Indonesia?"
BINGO.
"Eh correct! I bought this at Tanjong Pinang." was my reply.

This Nurani has got an eye for abayas. One look and she knows whether the abaya you are wearing come from Indonesia....India...etc.
Alhamdullilah, now that I am a hijaber, rezeki bertambah....
So many people wanna turn me into a hijabella.
Heeee! I feel so loved! Masyallah!

Nurani, thank you for sharing with me your story.
What started out as a much needed holiday with her husband turned out to be one that has turned her into a businesswoman.
She went to Dubai last September and bought soooooo many abayas for HERSELF.

Her husband made a passing remark,"Boleh bukak kedai." (Can open shop already)
She paid no attention to that but when she returned to Singapore and showed the gorgeous and exclusive pieces to her families and friends, they just grabbed until she had no more pieces for herself.

Beautiful Abayas will be laid out for us ladies to try, buy, and take home that night. I'm gonna bring my mom! She'll be thrilled since she is an avid Abaya wearer.

My shining star

I was Zayma's Primary 5 form teacher in 2008.
First time I saw her, I knew this one was a shining star.
Her handwriting was so neat.
Her eyes never blinked when I taught.

Her ambition at that time was to do well enough to go to secondary school.
"Zayma, that goal of yours need to be stretched. Too easy for you."
I remembered telling her that.

Since she was in the foundation stream, her path she thought would be what most would expect.
To Normal Technical Stream...Then ITE...Then Poly.

But this girl is too good and I knew that I had to stretch her. I'm glad she was willing to take on more challenging questions during the tuition sessions.
PSLE Results Day was a sweet one for her.

I continued teaching her even though she is already a secondary school student.
Before Zayma arrived, I'd be studying like mad because my brain so rusty liao.

I've never met any child so independent in her learning journey. Usually, I'd liase with my tutees' parents but this girl really takes charge of her academics. I've always instilled in my charges that one must always ask if you require new knowledge or when you're in doubt.
I salute Zayma for having that iniative to always approach me and seek my guidance.

A few weeks ago, Zayma SMSed me.

Such pleasant news.

Who would have thought that a Foundation pupil can actually score A1 for E Maths and have the option of taking Additional Maths? (I last time Express stream also never given this option lor!)
How amazing is that?

Zayma, you have surpassed my expectations and I am very honoured to be your teacher/tutor.

Good Monday morning!
Mr E just left for work.
Nyla is sitting opposite me doing a lil bit of writing.

Today is gonna be a 'Sharing is caring' entry.
Thanks to my previous entry, many of you ladies seemed to have taken a liking to the long cardigan I wore.

I love it too by the way! Too too pretty. And Jenn, you are so rocking The Excluzif Ponchoga woman.

2 Sundays ago, (yup THE Sunday I got hijabified), I was checking my email inbox when I stumbled upon a 'read already but have not replied' email by a group of 3 girls who just set up their online fashion boutique named MAIA.

2/3 of the MAIA team. One more shy la. :p

Mr E's niece Farha ever shared with me about MAIA since she modelled for them and also the fact that she is a close friend of one of the 3 MAIA bosses.
"Aunty Nura, MAIA's clothes are very like ZARA you know. Quality is damn good."

So apa lagi, I went to their website and true enough, I found their pieces to be really classy and unique. I thought I should share with you the girls' story behind MAIA.

A short but very meaningful note from MAIA.

As much as I am getting alot of support, I did have my fair share of criticisms when I started wearing the hijab.
"Ah aksyen baik ah tu."
"Step turning over a new leaf konon."

I have realised that no matter what you do, whether good or bad, if people don't like you, they never will and they will attack you ceaselessly and mercilessly with their words.
If previously, I'd flare my nostrils and bombard back, now these attacks mean nothing to me.

I am really in a good place now. In fact I'd like to share something by David Pollay:
"Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let it, they'll dump it on you. So when someone wants to dump on you, never take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on. Believe me, you'll be happier!"

How true. :)

Superb Saturday

"Teaching should be full of ideas instead of stuffed with facts."
Today, my partner, Jenn and I did just that during our Maths workshop.

And like our previous workshops, we learnt so much stuff from our lovely participants.
How we can use longans...pegs....straws...sweets...cheap toys...stuffed toys to teach Maths at home.
Best part, our kids think they are playing but uh uh, they are 'studying' there!

I'll share more in the next entry but for now I'd like to express my thanks to two people.

First, Mdm Nurani Senari. If it weren't for her message in Facebook, this Maths workshop would have never materialised.
"If we have teachers that share Maths learning tips.....Tuition for parents so we know how to teach our kids at home as well."

Second person, my beautiful Jenn, who, during our lunch date 2 weeks ago, just exclaimed,"What are you waiting for, Nura? Let's do it NOW!"
I was a lil bit hesitant considering I have only just finished a workshop just a few days before. (Baru nak slack kejap.)
But Jenn's energy was just way too infectious. Thanks for the push babester.

As I'm typing, I (as well as Jenn!) am feeling very happy to have given about 20 adults the knowledge and techniques to allow their children to be stimulated at home.
They have an average of say 2 kids? So from today onwards, about 40 children will be unconsciously learning at home and will not be Maths phobic considering they deal with this subject on an every day basis, thanks to their well equipped parents!
All praises to the One Above. Alhamdullilah!

Been up since 6 a.m.
Absolutely silent and I'm in complete solitude. There is just something very rejuvenating and absolutely peaceful about being alone and having some time for myself.
Nyla and I have a movie date with her kindy mates and their mommies later at noon so I'm settling as much work as possible.

I'm just happy that Jenn and I are all ready for our Maths workshop tomorrow.
Really looking forward to meeting the mommies and daddies!

Nyla 'bonding' with Number Bonds

One of the most fun and inexpensive types of manipulatives we can use to teach Maths concepts to our children is sweets.
I personally feel there is an instant fascination for them to play with (actually, they are learning lor!) sweets.
That plus the fact that they are most certainly allowed to eat their Maths manipulatives after the lesson. Hehehe.

Now that Nyla is entering Primary 1 next year, it is time we both get serious and consistent every morning for about 1 hour.
So last Friday, before she woke up, I had an idea on how to teach the concept of number bonds in a fun way and Nyla totally got it!

And like all kids, Nyla enjoys role playing. So here's a video of her 'teaching' me Number Bonds!

Don't worry...Nyla didn't eat all the sweets. Hee. Satu je dia ngap.

I am now only replying to the emails sent over the weekend.
Saturday was spent looking after my nephew, Rooqy, who kept us all busy!

By the way ladies, I am very inspired by the top I am wearing.
Insyallah, my mother and I will tag team and come up with DUAL-TONE ponchos.

Very excited just thinking about it! So do watch this space while we do abit of experimenting with contrasting colours.

The world is our classroom

Fantastic Friday Morning to all of you!

Jenn and I are already in full swing preparing for the upcoming Maths workshop on 17 December. We are really excited.
We will be closing the registration soon for not only is there a limited seating capacity but Jenn and I also want a small enough number to allow for personalised attention and assistance.

It has always been a pleasure working with Jenn. She is an extremely intelligent and witty person. On top of that, she is very efficient too. I think you all should get to know this amazing sista of mine better so I've invited her to be my guest blogger! Over to you Jenn! :)

THE WORLD IS OUR CLASSROOM

I’m a dreamer (so is Nura, I suspect) and Mathematics, a left-brain function primarily concerned with the logical, unromantic pragmatism of life, is at constant war with the right brainers that we both are. In our natural state, it gives us migraines. Causes hormonal imbalance and sudden outbursts that are, contrary to doctor’s (mis)diagnosis, NOT a monthly occurrence. There should be medication for the clinical condition: Mathematiphobia or Mathematoporosis, depending on the severity of one’s condition. To be honest, as a child, I loved Mathematics. On the condition that it gets delivered, once a year, in the form of a modest red packet during Chinese New Year. My Math improved further when my Malay neighbours and friends in school invited me to their house during Hari Raya. For reasons unbeknownst to me then, Mathematoporosis in the guise of a red or green packet wasn’t so bad after all.

And that, my friends, is incidental learning and what was to be my first lesson in financial literacy. In what proved to be a shotgun marriage of Mathematics and festivity highlights, I learnt the art (cue right brain music: “ke-ching”) of counting moolah. Ok, not really, but you get the drift. Children these days are way luckier. Parents and teachers are more informed and willing to engage in real world experiences to rouse the textbook sleepy heads from their mid-day siestas in the classrooms. The best Mathematics formula is one that uses the right brain to tune in to the left brain. The best Mathematics lesson takes place in the absence of worksheets. Or at least, momentarily without.

Teachers use the CPA approach, which has proven to work wonders in the classroom. The lower primary Math teacher subscribes religiously to the CPA, injecting fun, laughter and buckets of joy into the lesson and everybody emerges from the classroom a beaming Einstein. Ok, that’s in Utopia. Here’s reality. Increasingly, due to the large class size with different cognitive levels and time constraints, many a time, in trying to bridge the cognitive gaps of a class of, say, 30 children, teachers are left bereft of choices but to conduct remediation at the expense of CPA. This is made just a tad more complicated in considering the different learning styles of children. Different strokes for different folks. Is your child a spatial-visual learner, a kinetic learner, a language-oriented learner or a logical learner? If you’re scratching your head, dear parent, I feel you.

In the sharing session on the 17^th of December, we’ll cover the spectrum of children’s learning styles and the activities you can harness to address these styles, the CPA method, as well as cross-disciplinary learning (Nura and my personal favourite. We share tips on how you can infuse Art/English/Mother tongue lessons at home with Mathematics). The M.O.E.’s curriculum structure functions in the form of a spiral. What this means is in primary one, your child learns the foundation to more complex concepts of THE SAME TOPIC as he/she progresses through the primary, and subsequently, secondary school life. Let’s help our teachers to help our children spiral their way up their learning curve, and in the process, inject a little more fun, meaning and bonding with them. In addition, we will share with you a host of games and strategies you can carry out with your little ones at home to develop concentration, memory, processing speed and visualization skills. These skills do not apply to learning Mathematics per se. They will improve the general learning curve of your child, and since they involve using mathematical symbols and numbers, it makes learning come alive as your child sees Mathematics as a means to an end, and not an end in itself.

It’s not about us, really. Neither is it about how noble parents are. It’s about acting in the best interest of our children. So, whether or not we see you on the 17^th, dear parents, we hope you’ll continue to coach your children, and help them soar to greater heights. Cheers!

Baby Steps

So, Sunday was my first day of wearing the hijab.
My mother's eyes were fixated on me as I put as many penitis as possible to make sure the tudung maintain.
I tell you, my heart was beating so fast, I purposely took a long time in front of the mirror trying to delay the outing.
"Mom, I'm scared."
She teared.
"Mom, stop that please. You're not helping."
She replied,"Kin, Allah has given you HIS hidayah. Pls don't question and doubt. Hidayah may not come again."
And with that I said,"Ok. Let's go!"

I felt like a bride with an entourage following behind me.
The entourage consisted of Nyla, Rooqy (my 2 year old nephew), Bibik Juma and my biggest cheerleader of all, my mother.
Mr E poor thing la.
I kept saying 'Today is going to be the day' only for me to back out numerous times the past few weeks. So when he came home and I told him I survived the first day, he was surprised!

When I entered the lift, I tell you my heart was beating so fast...my facewas so tight.
And then something magical happened in the lift.
My two year old nephew, Rooqy, held my hand, looked up at me and said,"You sho pweety Aunty Nuya."
My lil angel. (My mom broke down again, by the way.)
Immediately, all my fears vanished.
I attended my secondary schoolmate's son's birthday function at the cc just across the road.
Spent about 30-45 minutes and then went back home.
I DID IT and I felt so blardy proud of myself.

The next morning, since Mr E had no classes, we had lunch at his school.
Then my mother SMSed me,"Nak go Orchard?"
I guess she's just proud to be seen with her daughter who has just donned the tudung.
We had a good time lunching and shopping.
I really must make an effort to go out with my mom more often.

This week, if the togas and ponchos reach some of you ladies late, we apologise k.
Both the seamstress and marketing person slack la. Hee!

Yesterday was my third day.
Early morning start since Nyla has swimming lessons with Kesy's boys every Tuesday morning.
Kesy embraced me so tight when she saw me.
"Welcome to the club!" hug la tu! Heee!
At about 10ish after Nyla's lesson ended, I received a phonecall from..... Guess who?
My mom la. (She's really addicted to me now as you all can see.)
Had lunch at her place before Nyla and I went to Science Centre to meet Nyla's classmates and their mommies.
The night before, I prepared the mommies.
They are real sweeties la ah.

I'm really taking baby steps.
I am currently experiencing so much love around me. At Facebook...Twitter...I'm real sorry I didn't get to reply you one by one but I read your messages. So touched. Feeling an enriched existence of love and hope its just amazing!

"I will do it once I have a baby..."
"I will do it when I turn 25.."
"I will do it during Ramadhan.."
"I will do it on New Year.." (same ol' same ol' New Year's resolution)

I have accepted that there will never be a perfect day....that right moment.
If I allow myself to be hesitant, I would never do anything at all.

Today is going to be that day.

Right now, I would love to come up with an interesting story on the reason behind this.
But, really I don't have such story.
So sorry to disappoint you.

The wearing of the beanies (yes, serkup) was my slow transition and that got me flak. :S

My younger brother, Jambi, is my critic.
He is very lassser.
His comments very rough one but his intentions are always good.

I've had enough of going around in circles dwelling on everything that can go wrong.
My mom told me this everytime the past few weeks,"Whatever you're feeling, remember that you're moving towards the right direction."

Honestly, I am feeling so nervous but I guess that's what true courage is about. "Just do it" even though one is feeling scared.
High time I defeat the devils and their whisperings that had been holding me back.

I really hope that
1) This will not just be a phase. (Insyallah will never go through dehijabization!)
2) This will not just be a piece of fabric on my head but a beginning of my special journey to my Creator.

I thank Allah for guiding me to this beautiful favour of HIS.

To my mother, the moment has finally come.
I know she has been praying for this moment for the longest time.
Thank you for never putting pressure on me, Mom!
Don't need to wait for my 30th birthday liao. :p

May the Almighty keep me steady and always guide me to the right path.

Bonds..as in James Bond?!

Fantastic Friday morning everyone!
As requested by you all, this will be the content of the Maths workshop (suitable for parents whose children are between the ages of 4-8) which will follow very closely to the lower primary Maths curriculum. (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Ordinal Numbers, Picture Graphs, Time, Money etc)

1. Understanding your child's unique learning style and crafting Mathematics lessons around it.

Nyla is a language oriented learner so we read Maths based story books before we sit down together to tackle the topic.

2. Identifying eureka moments/teaching opportunities in the environment be it at home or outside.

Pizzas are great for learning about fractions in Maths.

3. Inter-disciplinary learning
-Simply put, "interdisciplinary" means combining subjects together in many ways.
For example we use 'Eggs' as a central theme.

English lesson, I can read Nyla's Chickchickaboomz and construct some Comprehension questions...
We can most certainly eggs-plore Maths using eggs...
And as shown by the picture below, we can do a Science eggs-periment.
Kids so love Art and we can do egg painting!

4. Concentration, memory, processing speed and visualization techniques and heuristics.

Thought I'd share with you an 'excerpt' of an email sent by a parent who has already signed up for our Maths workshop!
So funny and at the same time, so true.

Jenn and I are so encouraged by the response and interest shown by you parents.

So many takeaways during last Sunday's sharing session.

Shikin, one of the Little Big Minds trio, shared very valuable Maths tips.....like how we can get our children to say out loud 'Block One hundred and two' as we walk past HDB Flat Blk 102....So they know the number and place values...

With more than 40 years of rich experience teaching Malay language, Mdm Rokaiyah felt that 'Bahasa Baku' should not be made fun of because little kids must be exposed to bahasa baku to get their basics right. If we don't converse with them in Bahasa Baku then, they will make spelling errors like 'mate' instead of 'mata'....'bukak' instead of 'buka'.....

Homeschooling mother Mdm Sukesy Mattar brought along so many toys and shared with us how she personally feels that just because a child is not sitting down doing his/her worksheet or assessment books, doesn't mean he/she is not learning.....

Mdm Diana kept asserting the importance of parental involvement in a child's life....

The session was indeed very well-received by parents.

However they are still very concerned with 'Maths'.

How can we help parents to be well equipped to help their children learn Maths at home?

When I shared with my partner, Jenn on last Sunday's event, she got very excited.
Honestly, I was feeling very mentally exhausted so she did a lot of talking yesterday.
I've always admired her high energy level. (Those who have attended our workshops before, you know how hyper she is!)

Another thing I like about her is her contacts.
How Jenn is constantly in touch with so many educational professionals, from both public and private sectors who have been teaching Mathematics in a holistic way.

So we have agreed to conduct a Mathematics Sharing Session on how we can help parents support their children's learning of Mathematics at home through problem scenarios, manipulatives, stories, games and various thinking strategies.
We will also follow very closely to the lower primary Maths curriculum!
This session is absolutely suitable for parents whose kiddies are between the ages of 4 to 8.

We are looking at having this 2-3 hrs workshop on Saturday, 17 December 2011 at onepeople.sg which is within walking distance of Braddell MRT Station.
Unfortunately, the room's maximum capacity is 25 and the management is pretty strict about this. :(

Summer In Love

I knew that I wanted to wear something relaxed, chic and less formal for last Sunday's event.
I just happened to be browsing through this blogshop, a newbie on the online shopping community, when this gorgeous icy blue maxi dress caught my eye.

Somehow, maxi dresses will always reign supreme one la ah.

At a click of the mouse, this pretty piece was delivered to my doorstep.
Other than the pretty and affordable dresses/tops (Suitable for work and casual!), another plus point would be this blogshop's prompt service.

I have exchanged numerous tele- conversations with the friendly blogshop owner.
Her name is Aishah. A sweetheart.
She has a regular day job at a construction company during the day and manages her blogshop at night.
Talk about being hardworking.
Well as the saying goes..'The harder you work, the luckier you get.'

E-tailer Aishah is also moving away from bulk purchasing from suppliers to in-house design, something I strongly encourage.

Divert a bit.
The thing about about blogshops is that they will carry similar designs.
Some blogshops will sell them cheap, some will mark up damn high. Those doing the latter, if you kena (as in your customers realised that they were charged so high) you die lor.
That's the reason why I decided to do the fashion business with my mom because normal blogshops seem to lack the exclusivity, hence we come up with our our laboriously sewn pieces...The Maxi Togas...The Mini Togas...The Toga Onesies...The Toga Oneskirts...The Ponchos...The Ponchogas.

Now, just because I am in this fashion business does not mean that I cannot support other e-taliers. Especially new ones.
In fact I felt very proud when I saw some of Summer In Love's self- designed pieces.

Magikal Sunday

For most of us, Sunday is family day.
Hence I didn't want my seminar attendees to worry about babysitting issues like
'Who can look after my child at home when I go to this seminar?'
Other than empowering these parents to be well- equipped as they prepare their young ones for primary school, I would also like this event to be one which encouraged family bonding.

Hence the idea of their children having an enriching plus super duper fun time while their parents listened to the speakers....

My 'Rachael Ray'

Other than last Sunday being an enriching day, it was also a sweet one for all of us present on that day.
Come I show you what was served on that day.

The lady in black beside me is my Rachael Ray who whipped up the sweet treats above!

Who is she?
None other than Liza better known in the cyber world as 'Cady McBronzie.'

I am a fan of her food blog.
Everytime I read her blog, I'd instantly turn into a domestic goddess.
Mr E is also very much aware of this.
Sometimes when I cook the same paticular dish often, he'd say, 'Cady never update blog with new recipes is it?'
So Liza, if you are reading this, keep doing whatcha doing gf with the sharing of recipes!

Liza was one of my first few customers when I launched The Excluzif Togas (Maxi) last year.
She needed a dress for her birthday party and ordered a black maxi toga. (This woman very happening one!)

Liza has since become a dear friend to me who is a keen supporter of my clothing line I run with my mom. Thank you my dear.

Now back to her blog, everytime I read it, I'd tell myself, 'This woman should do some food business man.'
So you imagine my delight when Liza launched her baby. Duh! It's about time lor!

I wasted no time in supporting the newest food entrepreneur and ordered her signature Nutella Bread and Butter Pudding.

Last Sunday, Liza 'unfolded' her latest project, Bottoms Up Dessert Isle.

What I witnessed last Sunday really warmed my heart.

That's Liza's dad. So touching to see a parent consistently offering loving encouragement and support in whatever their child is doing, no matter how old their child is.

And Liza was also accompanied by her buddy, Yati who provided a helping hand and moral support! That's what friends are for.

Yesterday...

Yesterday just reinforced what I have been doing and listening to the other speakers as well as the valuable feedback from the parents also gave me new ideas which inspire me to continue making a conscious effort to 'trick' Nyla into learning.
For example, Nyla doesn't have a clue that she is actually learning Maths while helping me cook in the kitchen...

Really, it was the most fulfilling Sunday ever!
So weird how I feel like the more I learn, the more I realise how little I know.
It's just that each new thing I learn will lead me to another new thing and another, and another and so on. Really fascinating.. That neverending quest for knowlege to be a better parent...a better educator.

Now, many people had put in a lot of effort for yesterday to be a success.
I can come up with a long mega entry with many pictures and include all of these special people but before I went to bed last night, I realised I shouldn't do that.

Each and everyone of them is special.
So I intend to thank them one by one, entry by entry, starting from tomorrow. :)

Time for me to get ready for a movie cum lunch date with Nyla's kindy mates and their mommas.

We are probably going to shop for our children's school bags too.
The special one that supports our babies' backs, ecnourages good posture and reduces strain on spine. Ya la since Nyla has to climb up the stairs and all in her new school. Once I get hold of this wonderbag, Ill share with you k!

Tomorrow is the release of the PSLE results.
Although I didn't fail, somehow because my family's expectations were sky high, I felt like a complete failure.
And my wish for tomorrow is that no kid will feel like this. They won't if their parents stick by them through their times of need.

In 1994, when my teacher patted my back and said to me , "It's ok Nurashikin...Must make it in secondary school ok.".....

I knew I had flunked in my PSLE exams. (So teachers, tomorrow when you see your kids, please at least let them 'read' their results slip before you give comment okay.)

When I saw my aggregate, I didn't cry. (Must maintain cool in front of friends mah)
All I knew was that I was so doomed.
My parents actually thought that I would outshine my elder brother, Bah who scored 268 for his PSLE. Mine didn't even 'touch' 220.

Mati mati tentu mati.

I remembered walking home so slowly. I felt like a loser.
But you know what made my heart sink to the ground?
The look of disappointment on my mother's face. :(
(Although she has since apologised to me for making me feel that way. Even up till today she feels bad.)
Mom, if you're reading this, don't be. I'm so over it. And I will keep making you feel proud Mom walaupon dah tua bangka.

I hated family gatherings the following year.
The looks my relatives gave me. The unnecessary comments like "Your elder brother too pandai la. Nobody can beat!"
(Yes, even today, my elder brother is still the one. I have my utmost respect for my Bah. Till today, whatever I do, I'll consult him. Sometimes the comments he gives are harsh but they are very constructive. I need that.)

Cut the story short, I worked hard in secondary school... Went to JC....Then NIE.

And I achieved my childhood ambition of being a teacher.

If I knew things would be like this, I would have celebrated my results man.
Sucha waste of negative energy.

Tomorrow will be a jantung- macam- nak -terputus day for my Primary 6 tutees and their parents.

As much as I try to be all relack about it, I must be honest. I am feeling a lil jittery.
Yesterday, I invited my brother's friend, Elisabeth (yes, The Alchemy Pad lady! Hee!) to give a motivational talk to the tutees since she conducts 'Grateful 101' weekly talks. My tutees had fun, and after the inspirational talk, they seemed calm and relaxed.

Elisabeth, thanks so much for spending your precious time with them. Means alot to all of us. :)

Now, I am not worried about their results.
I have done my best and my tutees worked very hard this year.

What I am worried would be their reaction should the results be poor.
And it certainly doesn't help that if they score a 'U' grade for their weakest subject, Maths, REPEAT PRIMARY 6 for them.
That's just our rigid educational system.

"Cher, very malu you know if retain."
"My friends celebrate Youth Day in secondary school..then I still celebrate Children's Day.."
"Teacher's Day, I sure ponteng one. Wait when my friends come back to visit primary school teachers, they show off their secondary school uniform, then I still wear primary school uniform."

My tutees (and any other P6 kids reading this), if you are reading this, I wish you the best tomorrow.
However, if repeat is your fate tomorrow, please take it positively for according to Winston Churchill,

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
Must pluck up that courage to work even harder.

Parents of Primary 6 pupils, if you're reading this,
If their results are good, Congratulations!
If their results are below your expectations but they move on to secondary school and they seem happy with their results, please celebrate with them. :)
If not so good, please put yourself in their shoes and don't make them feel even lousier.
If you turn your backs against them, who are they going to turn to for comfort man? :(

I just want all of you to know that PSLE does not determine one's future and that your children will make you proud...Maybe not now, but definitely later with your constant support, love and encouragement.
In this case, PSLE does not only stand for Primary School Leaving Examination...It also means Parents' Support, Love & Encouragement.

Lol) but when men forsake their rest time for the sake of our children's future, that's DA man! That's HAWT. I am right now at Coffee Bean with my speakers settling the Primary 1 seminar stuff. They are right now actively discussing on the topics they want to share with the seminar attendees. The activities they want the parents to participate! So exciting.

I have parents who mentioned that their children are still in Kindergarten and they would like to join. My answer: Of course. Furthermore you will be at a distinct advantage. :)

Storytelling at La Petite Montessori

La Petite Montessori 's theme for their Term 4 curriculum is 'Famous Authors' and their Principal Directress, Ms Ezwani Rahim has invited my little author to their boutique school yesterday for a storytelling session.
Of course Nyla and I accepted the invitation.

Furthermore, Nyla's done with school since the 1st of November so what better way to spend her free time!

That's us on the wall of fame! Nyla (and maknye) kembangz sekaliz.

These kids are very young but super focused, its amazing!

Honestly, as much as I'd like to call myself an entrepreneur, the real entrepreneur here is Nyla.
This girl is responsible for who I am today.
If it weren't for her creative ideas, I wouldn't be where I am today.
Effectively, Nyla has started working at age 5 with the launch of her story book.

Her 'salary' comes from the tremendous support thanks to you people who bought her books.
Mr E and I are merely encouraging her talent and we are grateful for the entreprenuerial opportunities given to her through these story telling sessions.

Since it was a working day for Nyla yesterday, it's only fair that she gets rewarded.

Macam kita...Dapat gaji aje pergi shopping.

By the way, thanks for the lunch treat Nyla!

I gave her a budget of $30 and phew, luckily she wanted something that was below the budget.

Cannot get real pet, fake one also can la.

I personally feel that it is vital to encourage entrepreneurial spirit in children.
I would like Nyla to understand that work is actually just a hobby that we get paid for.
And my kid here loves to do storytelling sessions with me.

As mentioned in the previous post, let's all say Hello to a very dear friend of mine. We share the same name. Same spelling somemore. We probably would have crossed paths at campus while we were studying at NIE years ago. A mother of 4 (Yes, FOUR!), I admire her gentle yet firm ways. She's also a very fun mommy, as you can see from this picture of her adorable children. :)

I'm sure, some of you have read this blog entry by Nura J and seen the poster below in our wall posts a week ago. And I'm sure, many of you went.....

"Huh? Siapa sak Sueetchic? Who is she to give a talk?"

"Sekadar ex-teacher je? Aku pun boleh kasi talk."

"Dah ada P1 Orientation pe. All important information will be given on that day what."

Kan kan kan.......?

Hehehe. Well, I wouldn't blame you. I was once like that.

In fact, I was skeptical when Nura had confirmed that she's roping me in. Happy giler but panic kejap pun ada. Until my wise parents, my group of sisters, my motivator, Mdm Nura J herself, my Little Big Minds partners, Sha and Niza and my dearest husband, of course, advised me otherwise.

Hubby said,"Yang famous sekarang pun tak pernah famous dulu. And yang famous sekarang pun tak akan famous forever what....."

Soooooooo true although it doesn't quite fit in the context of what I'm blogging about today. Hehe. Hubby, you know I still love you and take your nice words seriously. :p

But..I'm sure all of you get the drift. We don't have to be somebody famous to share what we know. We don't have to be somebody famous to start a change.

Start a Change...

That is what we're trying to do.

Change the mindset of us, Malays.

Lagi sekali!! (Step concert lah kan.) "Kata Melayu...."

So, kira, kita ni orang Melayu are gonna remain sore for others' achievements?

We want our children to excel but not do anything about it?

If you think sending your children for tuition by the time they are in P5 and not getting results good enough that make you worried for their PSLE, you might be a little too late. And sadly, Melayu kita yang ramai macam gitu.

If you already not know, I have four children. All of very close age gaps. (Ah ah kau...setahun satu..."Kata Melayu...")

If I were to worry for each of their academic skills when they're approaching P5/P6, can you imagine, I would have at least 4 consecutive years of living in stress and trauma! (Drama betul)

I wanna start now. Now that the firstborn is going to P1. Now that the second one has recognised words. Now that the third has developed an interest in books and writing. Now that the fourth is behaving like a monkey, following every single thing that her elder three siblings are doing.

I must start NOW.

And how do I start? First, I must have parents out there, especially the Malay parents who are kononnya modern but still don't know how to teach their children at home. Modern doesn't just mean keeping up with the fashion trend, buying the latest car, latest TV, latest bag or even the latest toy or books for your children.

An active modern parent has to be actively learning on how to teach their children at home. And that is what I wanna be.

Heard of this many times.

"Susahlah ajar anak sendiri."

Why?

Simply because we don't have enough knowledge on how we can guide our children at home. And for those who can't afford to send their kids for tuition, it's ok!!! Who says all tutors are good anyway? If it's just giving worksheets after worksheets, you can print them out yourselves and go through the answers with your children!

And that has been the most difficult for our society.

That is why, from the coming Sharing Session on the 27th November, we're not going to tell you whatever that can be found in your child's school website or even MOE's website.

We're not going to share with you the principles of education.

We're not going to share with you on the curriculum because all of that will be shared with during your child's Primary 1 orientation....

We're going to share with one another how to help our children be active in learning when they're with us.

We're going to share tips on how to benefit our children's school holidays without them realising that they're actually learning.

We're going to learn from one another what works best for certain types of children and also us, the parents.

Yes, we are. WE are so gonna take away a whole life of lessons, values and tips on teaching our children the way we're comfortable with.

And.....if the parents who attend the seminar agree, we might just help to start up a parent support group where we can share resources, more tips, more advice or even articles that can help us in one way or another.

Not a PSG in just a school.

But a PSG in Singapore.

And proud Malays of Singapore we will be! : D

It has been such a a fulfilling week, thus far. I hope it was for you too. :)

Yesterday thanks to the Alchemy pads entry, my inbox was bursting with orders and queries. Other than my big brother, we really have to thank Elisabeth for creating this awareness. If it weren't for her, I would just continue to suffer in silence with the itch...discharge...menstrual odour...
Because I too believe so much in these Alchemy sanitary products, I will be working closely with Elisabeth with regards to placing orders and delievering the pretty boxes to you ladies. A few weeks ago, my elder brother,Bah, got me a gift.
First time ever sia he bought me something.

"Kin, this is for you. It's really good. Try it. I bought for my wife too."

The packaging was so nice I thought it was a huge box of chocolates lor.
So you imagine my surprise... or rather, shock when it was a box of pads.

Yes...Sanitary Pads.

Him: You love your 'down there', you use this. If you don't believe me, then I'll ask Elisabeth to come and meet you. You have to hear her tell you the story of these pads, Kin.

At that time, I was not interested because I was happy with my jumbo-sized pads. They are so long...some longer than my underwear.
Everytime I wear those pads, whenever I sit, I'd worry if there would be a 'pad-crack' instead of a butt crack la.

The following days to come, Bah kept sms-ing me when I was free to meet his friend, Elisabeth....whether I have called her.

I erm...just ignored those smses...but when it comes to Rooqy, Id be so prompt in replying.

Then last week on November 2 to be precise, Elisabeth called me.
Yup, my Bah gave up on me so he gave her my number.

She sounded so sweet over the phone I felt really obliged to see her. So I fixed an appointment with her and after hearing her out, I felt so angry at myself for delaying all of this.
Really really sorry Bah and Elisabeth.

This is really beginning to sound like an advertorial.
BUT it is not. I am a pad-convert.
And you all know my motto is SHARING IS CARING.

Whatever that has done me good, I will share with you girls one.

So now, I would like to share how the Alchemy Sanitary Pads have benefitted me personally.

1) My menstrual cycle is usually 28 day cycle kind. Few months ago, it became a 24-25 day cycle kind for more than 3 consecutive months. I started using the Alchemy pad on November 4 to be exact and while I was preparing Aunt Flo to come and visit me on the 24th day, it didn't. I got to perform the Aidiladha prayers! Alhamdullilah. And then it arrived. On the 28th day. So hopefully my 28 day cycle is back.

2) Ok this is getting embarrassing but what the heck. Do you sometimes experience menstrual odour? If yes, hi-5. With this Alchemy pad, no smell at all. Nothing hence making me all the more convinced that the Alchemy pads are chemical-free, ensuring that menstrual flow not be exposed to air and allow vaginal self-cleaning.

3) I like the feeling of the smooth cotton surface. Very gentle.

4) Every pad is vaccum sealed preventing dirt, dust and bacteria from entering. Got expiry date somemore. By the way, I used to buy twin pack kind of pads (2 in 1). Cheaper. Probably those were past expiry date la! Must clear stock kind. Aaaarrrrrgh. How depressing. :(

Why am I so into these Alchemy Pads?

Well, I have a daughter who will enter puberty in say 5-6 years' time.
I will make sure I empower Nyla through proper education of women’s health.
In fact Nyla was beside me when Elisabeth was doing the demo. Nyla, it wasn't only educational for you...it was for Mommy too.

Will not let her (and me!) use over- the -counter pads (YES, the jumbo ones included!) and let her (and my!) 'down there' be exposed to the toxins by those pads since they are made of recycled papers. (IMAGINE YOUR 'DOWN THERE' BEING PADDED BY NEWSPAPER.... Your 'down there' being exposed to carbon and all. :((((( So for more than 10 years, I have been padded like that man. :(((( )

And because these sanitary pads are bleached, people with high exposure to dioxins may be at risk for other factors that could increase the risk of PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), reduce fertility and probably interfere with normal fetal and childhood development.

I should have known better sey.
My brother is a health freak. He is a facts and figures kind of person.
The fact that these Alchemy Pads 'underwent' PSB Lab Tests, no wonder he die die wanted me to use this.

Comes in a box. Now you know why I thought it was a box of expensive chocolates!

Remember the Toga Top my mom sewed as a birthday gift?

While I was folding these toga tops into my bag for the photoshoot, Nyla made a passing remark.

'This one is half toga-half poncho.'

Teachable moment here so, I switched on the laptop and introduced her to the world of 'cross breed' animals since she really loves animals.
In fact I have already signed her up for the Zoo Explorer Camp.

The Storm

Usually in the mornings, I'd read to Nyla 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' kind of stories.
Recently, Mr E brought home 'Stories for the family's heart' book which has about 100 stories to encourage families from his school library.
Given the rather gloomy weather today, Nyla and I read 'The Storm'.
Let me share this ultra short story with you all.

Exactly a week ago, I went to Jakarta.
Must thank ROAM for this 2nd sponsored trip.
The first one was the family holiday to Lombok.

I can never get tired of Jakarta.
In fact it was only last June that Mr E, Nyla and I went to Jakarta with my parents.
Anyway, do read this and this. Jakarta fanatic right here! Heee!

Still in the midst of discussing about the upcoming Primary One Seminar but since they are all lunching, might as well blog a bit about it.
Here goes!

YOUR SON/DAUGHTER/COUSIN/NIECE/NEPHEW/SISTER/BROTHER ENTERING PRIMARY ONE NEXT YEAR?
If yes, I have awesome piece of news.

Us educators, mommies and entrepreneurs 'met' on TWI-BOOK and we will be joining forces, putting together our strengths and sharing with you useful tips on how to prepare your children for Primary 1!

But before that, I thought I should share the reason why I wanna do this seminar.

I personally feel that it is very important to start early. *Jangan budak tu nak masok Primary 6, baru panic carikkan budak tu tutor la...enrol dia masok enrichment camp la.. etc*

Moreover, the speakers for this event are really bukan calang-calang punya orang.

We have former teacher, Nurashikin Rahmat who is now a trainer with a reputable company, Creative Maths. As an experienced lower primary teacher, she will be sharing some Maths tips with you mommies and daddies. The skills shared will be very useful and can be practised right through your child's primary school years. She believes that children lack the heuristic skills to tackle complicated problem sums and wants to help parents tackle this problem.

I have also invited Cikgu Rokaiyah Mustakem, an experienced Malay teacher (over 20 years experience!) who enjoys teaching lower primary children. She is such a warm and nurturing person. She will share her expertise on how to help our children master the Malay Language.

I'm handling the 'English' part. I am so pleased to be sharing with you all the enriching reading and writing activities that I have embarked with Nyla at home.

Other than educators, mommies will also be sharing their experiences.

We have Diana Hairul.
[I' knew' of her existence in 2005. Famous amous dekni. A pity was that I never got to know her as a person and I thought I knew her inside out. Shame on me. When we finally met and bonded thanks to our children who play very well together, I found Diana to be like nothing that I heard her to be lor. Again, shame on me. She is such a committed mother and wife. Always making sure her sons' schedules are bustling with activities. Ok Diana's son, Samuel, is in one of the top primary schools here in Singapore and she will share with you mommies and daddies on how she and her son cope in a competitive environment.

Another mommy I have invited is Sukesy Mattar. She is a homeschooling mother.
"What do I share? Tell the kids to not go to school?!" Hahahahaa. She is a very intelligent and witty person.
Well.. I admire Kesy. Her positivity. Instilling a zest for learning is instilling a zest for life. And Kesy is that! Because our children attend swimming lessons together, she always shares with me the fun and enriching activities she does with her children at home. And on the 27th, after digesting Kesy's input, you parents will have a better idea of creative and educational way of having fun while your kids are at home.

Simple Pleasures

I turned 29 last Monday.
I have reached the-end-of-the-twenties- line.

When I was young like this...
I expected toys as presents from my parents.

And then when I was still dating Mr E, I expected him to shower me with lavish gifts such as
Tiff & Co la...LV la...etc.

Now that I am older (and hopefully wiser) plus the fact that I am a mother, I now place the highest value on the least materialistic options like:

Food...
Have you tried Ayam Bakar Ojolali at Lucky Plaza?
Damn yummylicious can???!
I'm not fan of breast meat so I always request for thigh.

And when faced with good food, you just don't think about smiling for the camera la uh!

I am really blessed to have these girls as my buddies.

My mom...the person who brought me into this world. And every birthday of mine, she'd say, "Kau la paling susah time Mak nak beranak..."

Anyway, she sewed me a new Toga top as a birthday gift.

When I look at this picture, my heart ached a little.
My parents have aged. Especially my dad. :(
I am also saddened that he has somewhat lost his extreme positivity in life. Don't get me wrong. He is still positive and all but he is just less hyper like as if age is thinning his hopes and dreams. Papa J, time to just take it slow...rest and enjoy your golden years.

Too bad my younger bro, Jambi couldn't join us yesterday. He had to study. (Ya right lor)
Nevertheless, we still wished you (and Jac) joined us, Jam.

Last lap now before the big 30.
Although I am certainly not the child I once was, I don't feel old.
I hope I can continue to do more new and exciting stuff to continue feeling young and vibrant.

Let's do a lil bit of shopping...

Marvellous Monday Morning all! :)
I'm gonna help you beat the dreaded Monday morning blues babesies.
Treatment: Retail Therapy.
Heeeee. :)

Be it whether it is shopping for yourself or shopping for a girlfriend's gift, I might just have what you're looking for.

Something loose fitting....Something stylish.. and something that is definitely effortlessly chic. :)

I'm sure by now most of you know that I do this fashion business with my mom and Nyla.

Basically this is how we work.

I'll think of something that I (and most women) love to wear.
And then I'll go over to mom's and draw it out for her.
She'll then go over to her 'sewing room' and work her magic.
I'll then wear it and catwalk in front of her.
If need be, we'd tweak the design.
When all the pieces are ready, we'd interrupt Nyla who will either be watching television or playing with her toys and ask her to name our pieces.
Once that's done, photoshoot time with my personal stylist Tina and photographers Jali/Frances/Azhar.
And then I blog for you all lor. :)

Sounds easy but I must admit that the process is tiring.
However ALL WORTH IT la seeing my babesies look pretty and happy! :)

Been pretty quiet about poncho updates last week because all of them have been wiped out.
So sorry to have to inform potential customers that we do not have ready stock of ponchos.

Rethink Breast Cancer...

LOVELY LOMBOK

If it weren't for these 3 people: Farhi, Farha (I know their names sound as if they are twins but they aren't. Heh!) and Awal, Lombok would forever be a secret to Mr E, Nyla and I.
So, thank you the 3 of you for whisking the 3 of us away to Lombok, an island known as Indonesia's best kept secret.

Never before have I met with such friendly travel agents.
Not only that!
The itinerary they designed for us was so personalised and extremely detailed.

My 2 loves obviously looking forward to their holiday!

We are so used to sending off people at the Departure Hall...
Damn it feels great to be IN it. Hahhaha!

Plane ride took about 3 hours.

When we reached there at about six- ish in the evening, it was already dark.
Pak Anwar brought us to our hotel where we checked in.
And then we proceeded to have our dinner at the hotel where so much seafood was waiting for us to 'ngap!'

Hotel breakfast was provided througout our stay.
Our first day having breakfast by the pool.

Yup! Nyla's wearing a fringe poncho.

While waiting for Pak Anwar to fetch us to go to Gili Island, we relaxed at the beach and did some people-watching.

From Sengigi to Gili Trawangan, we took 'Lisa'.

I must say the boat ride was a lil scary especially when the waters are choppy.
Nyla on the other hand enjoyed it tremendously.
"Mommy, like roller coaster ride!" -____-

Blessed with clear azure waters teeming with marine life, Gili is a MUST GO!
We wasted no time in getting into the water!

Mr E also took the opportunity to teach Nyla how to snorkle since she can already swim.
Know why he's laughing?
Nyla was so noisy underwater!
She has never experienced swimming with fishies before so she got super excited when the fishies swam past her!

We never worried about food because Farhi, Farha and Awal really handled everything for us.
All we had to do was refer to the itinerary.
Example: 1 p.m. Lunch at Yessy Cafe.
We would report to Pak Anwar and he'd bring us there!

Also since Lombok is Muslim majority, easier for us Muslims to find Halal food.

After filling our bellies, it was time to explore Gili Trawangan.

A Cidomo also known as "Lombok's Ferrari' according to Pak Anwar.
It is a highly popular mode of transportation.
Honestly, a sad sight to see the horses having to work.
Nyla is very keen to write a 3rd book on a Cidomo horse.
We shall see about that!

So we chose to walk instead of riding a Cidomo.

At the Turtle Sanctuary.
Instead of being sold to the markets, the local people will collect the eggs and place them in secure incubation areas in the sanctuary.

After hatching, these baby turtles will be kept in big tanks until they are about 1 year old and large enough to be released to the sea.

Shopping time. My favourite. :p

The boat ride from Gili to Sengigi made us all drenched!
It was really an adventure! Hahaha!
By the time we reached Sengigi, we went back to the hotel to freshen up before our dinner at a restaurant near to our hotel.

Nyla is not that a great fan of seafood so she tried her luck and requested for her ultimate favourite dish, 'brown eggy'.

Wish granted.

After dinner, we told Pak Anwar that he didn't need to drive us back to the hotel since we wanted to visit the line of handicraft shops which was within walking distance of our hotel.

Now, initially the plan was that this trip would be a 'honeymoon' vacation for Mr E and I.
However, while we were discussing, Nyla eavesdropped and got raging mad when she found out that she wasn't included.
Funny thing was we weren't 'sold' when she was throwing tantrum.
When she finally cooled down, she said,"Ok. I'll stay with Tok Mummy. I''l try but I think I'll surely cry at night."
And then she started sobbing.
Damn heart pain so within 5 minutes, Mr E and I told her, "Ok la! You're coming with us."
Immediately, she scooted to her bedroom and took out her Minnie Mouse luggage.

Felt extremely glad to have brought Nyla to Lombok and expose her to its authentic cultural experience...

Feeding monkeys time at the monkey forest.
As you can see, I'm not in the picture.
I was in the car the whole time screaming:

"Nyla be careful!"
"Nyla, there's a monkey behind you! Watch ouuuuttttt!"
"Nyla, don't make them lick you ahhhh!"
"Nyla, not too near, wait they bite!"

Of course, she (and Mr E!!) ignored me.

There was this pregnant monkey who kept tailing Nyla.
Mr E: Nyla. Feed this pregnant monkey.
Nyla: I don't want.
Mr E: SHE IS ALWAYS COMING TO YOU. POOR THING. FEED HER!
Nyla: NOOOOOOO! STOP FORCING ME DADDDDYYYYY! I DON'T WANT!

So when she was back in the car, I wanted to know why she avoided that particular monkey.
Me: Why didn't you feed the pregnant monkey Nyla?
Nyla: Because I scared the baby inside her will choke on the peanut and die.

Right.

Next, we visited Sade village which still holds Lombok's culture, where we can see the original ancient homes of Lombok without windows and the floor made of buffalo or cow’s soil.

Nyla is at the 2nd storey where the kitchen is. It is also where the girls sleep.

Nyla bargaining with the business girls. Common sight to see many of these villagers selling souvenirs.. Their source of income and we did our bit to help preserve a culture which otherwise would have disappeared.

We had time to kill after all that adventure so Pak Anwar brought us to Mataram Mall.
Our feet were aching so to the salon we went to pamper ourselves.

On our last day of stay at Lombok, we just relaxed by the pool.

Since it was a weekday morning, the pool was not crowded at all.
She conquered the slide.

The person who made our visit to Lombok very memorable.
He is such a sweetheart.

Sheraton Sengigi Beach Resort, the hotel we stayed in for 4 days/3 nights.

As usual after every adventure, Nyla would whip out her journal and write/draw about her experiences.

Having been so used to seeing towering skyscrapers, watching TV, constantly being engrossed with the smartphones, the 4 days at Lombok filled us 3 with such awe and wonder.
We were dazzled by our spectacular encounter with nature.

Seeing my girl enjoy the beauty of unspoiled nature is indeed the perfect childhood any child should experience.
Not only was it an enjoyable vacation for my family, it was an enriching one as well.

As with previous years, my tutees will just camp out at my place for half a day during the PSLE days.
Since their parents are working and they have no remedial lessons in school, they come to my place to do last minute revision with my guidance and supervision.
I am very fortunate because their parents are all very sweet too.

A parent has been sponsoring food the past 2 days.
Mdm Ifa, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Ms Idayu, thank you for driving one of my tutees home. Not only did he save money on his EZ link card... Because of you, his energy was reserved for the next day's paper.
Mdm Maria, thank you for supporting my 'clothing line.' Hehehe!

Anyway, the New Paper New Face Contestants' Profile arrived yesterday.
During their break, for the fun of it, I actually asked my tutees' opinions. Haha! Kids are very honest so I just want to hear their comments.
My mentel girls were more than pleased to give their opinions.
The boys got super shy and looked away...BUT I caught them looking at the babes! Cheh!
All 20 girls are too stunning to be missed...right boys?!

Here, I would like to express my gratitude to my niece, Shofiyah.
She is my 'super-sub' tutor for the 2nd year running.
Usually after the prelims, I will have a few at-risk tutees and like a super tutor, Shofi will step in to help these children by giving extra lessons.
I appreciate this very much Shof. Mwaaah.

As I waved goodbye to my Primary Sixers today, I felt sad. :(
A few of the girls cried when they kissed my hand.
My eyes were brimming with tears too when I asked them for forgiveness for the times I made them feel small. (because I know they can do better.)
Flashback of me screaming at them.... counselling them....consoling them.....laughing at/with them.

As I look at my study table which is filled with stacks of Primary 6 exam papers and assessment books, I felt relieved that my work is done.
However at the same time, I felt sad that it is over.
My home suddenly feels like an empty playground.
This year's Primary 6 batch is just an awesome bunch.
They may be weak academically but they are definitely very hardworking.

I came across my buddy, Nurul's Facebook Status Update. She is a teacher I admire very much too. Very loving...very patient. Her pupils adore her very much.

Here goes:
Like a mother bird, I let my pupils fly free at 1 p.m. today. Have prepared them to fly since last year. It is time to let go.

Tomorrow is the subject my kids fear most: Mathematics.

In my personal opinion, Singapore really needs to change her education system.
I feel it is vicious on these lower ability children.
Get a 'U grade for 1 subject..that's it....wear back your primary school uniform and REPEAT.
12 year olds should never be made to feel this kind of stress.... and embarrassment man.
Furthermore I have taught Secondary 1 Normal Technical before and the stuff that they learn are more or less the same as Primary 6's syllabus anyway.
So might as well promote all of them to secondary school.
Sigh...I can go on and on but yeah, doubt this say of mine gonna make a difference anyway.

Having taught these unpolished gems, I really believe that results is not everything.
To me, positive attitude goes a long way and I am very proud of each and everyone of them for trying their very best to just keep improving in their subjects.

Yesterday was a very busy day for me. In fact today as well.
PSLE this Thursday so tuition sessions the past few weeks were pretty intensive and frequent.

Then, I thought of my mom and imagined her working diligently behind the sewing machine producing all the lovely togas and ponchos.
And here I am complaining that I am suffering from 'Imsobusy-itis'. Cheh.

Anyway, what makes my mom very happy is when she sees anybody wear her creations.

Mom: Photoshoot nanti jadi tak? (Later photoshoot how?)
Me: Jadi. Lepas tuition, nanti Kin pegi. (On. I'll go after tuition.)
Mom: Kalau tak penat, datang rumah mak okay. Mak nak tengok gambar. (If not tired, come to my house ok. I want to see the pics.)
Me: Okay.
Mom: Nyla macam mana? (Then, Nyla how?)
Me: I bring her along aje la.
Mom: Kesian budak tu. Nanti, mak and bapak amik dia la. Bawak dia keluar. (Poor thing. I'll fetch her later with Dad. We will bring her out.)

Mom, I am very indebted to you.

To 3 very young and dynamic entrepreneurs who own a travel agency, LOMBOK is a hidden gem.
My family was very fortunate to be able to visit "Indonesia's best kept secret" last weekend.
I uploaded these 3 pictures while we were there.

Raya Round 3

And, we're done!
Yesterday was the final raya outing.
Nyla and I wore very simple baju kurungs.

In fact the white baju kurung tops are actually Malaysia's school uniform.
Haha! I ain't kidding. Very cheap too. I got it quite a long time ago at a departmental store.
Actually anywhere in JB also have la, especially when the new school term is about to begin. :)

As you can see, Nyla didn't bring her handbag along because 'got pocket la mommy!'
She actually converted a hairband into a tiara.
Me: Nyla, dont' you think you look ridiculous?
Nyla: No. You're the ridiculous one. Nice what.

From head (the hairband) to toes (the slippers!!!) all her idea.

Now that I am married, I definitely treasure my Raya moments more with my 2 brothers.

Balik Kampung 2011

Every Hari Raya, sure go Batu Pahat one.
Nyla's most favourite Hari Raya Itinerary.
While we were on our way, she kept asking, "Are we going to reach?"

Now that we are back home, she is already asking, "How many days more then can go kampung again?"

Anyway, yesterday morning was a bit chaotic because we woke up late. Yikes!
I had no time to put on make up as my in laws were already at the carpark waiting for us. So just slapped on my face my sun block and baby powder.
Oh Tina, my make up guru, I have failed you! :p
Mr E on the other hand, didn't even put on his kain samping and songkok.
Nyla too wasn't spared.
She went out of the house with her dripping wet and very tangled hair. :S

Wearing my mom's vintage kebaya there. Fits perfectly well on me.

The babe really really really wanna wear a toga dress.
So she got her wish granted, much to her joy. Added a small brooch to glam up her midnight navy blue toga.

Nyla and her great grandmother. Nyla only sees her once a year but she frequently talks about her 'yot'.

Changed into their home clothes. Blending in with the kampong children already! These 2 girls had so much fun chasing the chickens...
